After she began appearing on TV shows and on films, her popularity increased. Tonya became a nationally recognized star in 1994 after Nancy Kerrigan who was Tonya's primary competitor was murdered just minutes before the National Championship. It was her accomplishments and life stories that made her part of academic assessment. Tonya's biopic "I, Tonya" that was released in 2017 was a homage to Tonya.
